If you have been to the Prahran Market recently, then you may have noticed a new pop-up haven, the Social Food Project.

This joint venture pop-up brings together the various vendors at the market and the importance of sustainable food. Prahran Market demonstrates a philosophy of being sustainable in all aspects, and the Social Food Project intends to convey that message.

Their aim is to generate consciousness around food origins, by highlighting new standards of minimising waste, food system support, and supply chain resilience through low impact food workshops and events.

Visitors can expect a food sample and demonstrations that are delivered based on seasonality and educate the public on their approach to being sustainable. The menu includes dishes that are made with locally sourced ingredients and the drinks on offer are sourced from emerging suppliers and makers, all involving production techniques that are low-impact.

The bar and events venue serves up dishes to the public and runs workshops and classes on Saturdays and Sundays. These events promote community engagement and social interaction, while helping people to develop and learn new kitchen skills with a focus on seasonality and affordability.

With a calendar until March 2020, there are various types of upcoming workshops and masterclasses to anticipate including a Healthy Pesto hands-on workshop, and a Native spiced dukkha hands-on workshop. Visitors can also expect a Zero-waste masterclass that runs from 6-8pm on various Thursday evenings.

The workshops are held on weekend afternoons, and run for roughly 20 minutes. Tickets can be purchased on their website and cost $10 for the weekend workshops or $35 for the Thursday masterclasses. They include fresh produce and ingredients, a jar of whatever you worked on to enjoy at home, and on Thursday nights, a glass of wine to reward you for your efforts.

The team are also mindful of their environmental impact in relation to the architecture and décor of the space, which involves second-hand materials. Additionally, they aim to educate other vendors and hospitality businesses in relation to minimizing environmental impact by keeping an eye on their own operations and consequential effect on the environment.
